Urban Rail Systems in Turkey Maintain Their Speed

Turkey’s Leadership and Development in Urban Rail Systems

Turkey is rising to a pioneering position in urban rail systems through extensive investments and infrastructure projects in transportation. The recent steps are crowned with large-scale projects aimed at alleviating city traffic problems, promoting environmentally friendly transportation, and increasing quality of life. Thanks to these strategic moves, Turkey is becoming a decisive implementation hub that integrates sustainability and high technology in transportation.

The Importance of Current Rail Line and Capacity

Currently, Turkey has a total of approximately 1,036 kilometers of urban rail networks. The government, which has built 434 kilometers of these lines, continues its vision of establishing modern and integrated mass transit systems without slowing down. This infrastructure serves about 3 billion passengers annually and greatly relieves traffic congestion in cities. At the same time, these infrastructure projects play a critical role in supporting economic growth and employment.

New Projects and Expansion Plans

Turkey continues to work on major projects to expand the existing rail network and add new lines. Currently, reinforcement of a 122-kilometer new line is progressing rapidly, while a 297-kilometer new line is in the planning stage. These projects are designed to increase transportation capacity in large cities and adapt to urban growth.

Among successful city projects are infrastructure investments such as Konya City Hospital – Stadium Phase 2 Tram Line and Kocaeli Gulf Rail Metro Line. These lines aim to offer fast, reliable, and comfortable options for urban transportation, making daily life easier for citizens.

2026 Goals and Ongoing Projects

The Ministry’s 2026 vision focuses on strengthening the existing infrastructure and expanding the transportation network with new lines. In line with these goals, remaining parts of major projects such as Halkalı – Başakşehir – Istanbul Airport Metro Line will be completed, while projects like Altunizade – Çamlıca – Bosna Boulevard Metro Line in Istanbul and Konyaray in Konya are progressing rapidly.

Upcoming planned projects include Trabzon Rail System Line, Samsun Kılıçdede – City Hospital – Public Campus line, Istanbul Yavuztürk – Ümraniye Sports Village line, and Adapazarı – Serdivan Tram. Completing these projects will significantly transform urban transportation infrastructure, improving citizens’ quality of life and making cities healthier and more sustainable.

Leadership in Technology and Sustainable Transportation Approaches

Turkey’s advancements in rail system technologies highlight smart transportation solutions and sustainable approaches. Modern tram, metro, and light rail systems provide significant advantages in energy efficiency and environmental sensitivity. Additionally, innovative projects, communication technologies, and digital integration are making urban transportation safer and more efficient.

Thanks to these technological advancements, urban rail systems in Turkey are recognized not only as transportation means but also as fundamental pillars of urban development. These systems aim to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon footprints, and save time for citizens.

Turkey’s Future Vision in Transportation

Our future vision includes making Turkey’s transportation infrastructure completely sustainable, integrated, and technologically advanced. In this context, the total length of urban rail systems will increase each year, and new technologies and smart transportation solutions will gain momentum. Additionally, efforts are ongoing to reshape urban transportation plans in line with environmental protection and energy efficiency principles.
