New Torpedo Capability for the U.S. Navy

One of the leading defense companies in the United States, Northrop Grumman, announced plans to produce innovative and lightweight next-generation torpedoes for the U.S. Navy. The company states that this advanced weapon significantly enhances operational effectiveness against underwater targets. The total contract value is $233 million, covering product manufacturing verification, quality control, and testing processes. Deliveries will be made through the Plymouth facilities in Minnesota and the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia.

Northrop Grumman executives emphasize that technological infrastructure and high production capacity enable the U.S. Navy to respond more rapidly and effectively to the rapidly changing threat environment. They aim to strengthen the integration between submarine and surface warfare systems with this next-generation torpedo.

“Will make a great contribution to new-generation naval defense”

Northrop Grumman Weapon Systems Vice President Dave Fine stated; “By combining over 80 years of torpedo technology experience with high production capacity and speed, we are accelerating the design and manufacturing processes of the Advanced Lightweight Torpedo. This new weapon will be a significant response against submarine threats for both the United States and its allies.”

Enhancing power and intelligence with the current MOD 2 version

The MK54 MOD 2 torpedo integrated into the project was designed under the leadership of the U.S. Navy in partnership with the Australian Defense Forces. This new version offers higher performance and lethality compared to the current MK54 MOD 0 and MOD 1 models, with improved warhead, more advanced processors, and target detection technologies. Additionally, this torpedo can be launched from surface ships, maritime patrol aircraft, and helicopters. It has the capability to detect targets in all maritime environments and to destroy them effectively.

Next-generation torpedo playing a critical role in U.S. submarine defense

The developed lightweight torpedo is seen as a fundamental security element against U.S. submarine threats. As one of the key components of a multilayered defense strategy, this weapon, equipped with next-generation technology, reinforces dominance in naval warfare.

With approximately 100,000 employees and 2.7 million square meters of manufacturing space, Northrop Grumman makes a difference with its high-scale and rapid production capacity. The company continuously strengthens its innovation and infrastructure to provide solutions suitable for the security needs of the future.
