Germany’s former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who retired from active politics in December 2021, received an honorary doctorate from Israel.
At a ceremony held in Israel this evening, the Weizmann Institute of Science awarded Merkel an honorary doctorate in recognition of her unique contributions to the institute, global diplomacy, and international partnerships, as well as her solidarity and friendship with Israel and her firm fight against antisemitism.
The Weizmann Institute of Science had named one of the scholarships given to Merkel during her visit to Israel in 2021 before she stepped down.
During that visit, Merkel stated that Israel’s security is a matter of German national interest.
Due to her visit to Israel, Merkel had announced that she would not participate in the 70th birthday celebrations of Prime Minister Friedrich Merz on Tuesday, November 11.
