Uraloğlu: Investments in Connection Lines Accelerated

A New Era Begins in Turkey’s Railway Infrastructure

Turkey continues to elevate rail transportation to a central role in order to strengthen its economic growth and logistics infrastructure. In this context, especially the interconnection lines projects that integrate logistics centers and industrial production areas with ports and other transportation routes are becoming increasingly important. Implementing these projects significantly enhances Turkey’s both international and regional logistics power and plays a key role in economic development.

Current and Planned Interconnection Lines

Currently, there are 287 interconnection lines built over Turkey’s total railway infrastructure, with a total length reaching 445.8 kilometers. These lines mainly serve to connect industrial zones and ports, increasing freight capacity and offering more sustainable transportation options.

Strengthening through Ongoing and Completed Projects

At the moment, a total of 9 major projects are underway in interconnection line projects. The combined length of these projects is approximately 150.5 kilometers, including critical transportation points such as Filyos, Adapazarı Karasu, Afyonkarahisar İşcehisar, Polatlı, TIC OSD, Çukurova, and the Dörtyol-Hassa Tunnel. These projects aim to develop logistics centers and industrial zones to meet international standards, thereby increasing efficiency in freight transportation.

New Lines Enhancing Logistics Integration

Besides current and ongoing projects, 10 new interconnection lines totaling 82.4 kilometers are planned, approved by the Logistics Coordination Board. Additionally, 17 projects with a length of 189.4 kilometers are in detailed survey and project stages, further expanding Turkey’s layered logistics infrastructure.

Long-Term Goals and Strategies

Within the framework of the 12th Development Plan, Turkey prioritizes increasing the length of interconnection lines to 608 kilometers by 2028. These targets aim to increase the total number of interconnection lines to 331 and their total length to 885.1 kilometers upon completion of both existing and planned projects. As a result, the country’s railway integration level will significantly rise, positioning Turkey as a regional logistics leader.

Freight Transportation and Economic Opportunities

One of the most important benefits of interconnection lines is boosting freight carrying capacity. Currently, freight transported on these lines accounts for approximately 46.9% of total rail freight. In the first ten months of 2023, about 9.8 million tons of cargo were transported via these lines. These figures clearly demonstrate the contribution of rail logistics to sustainable and economic growth.

The Future of Turkey’s Logistics Power

Thanks to high-capacity and integrated infrastructure, Turkey is making steady progress towards becoming a regional logistics hub. New interconnection line projects support both economically and environmentally sustainable transportation solutions, reducing costs and shortening delivery times. These developments will enable Turkey to take a leading position both internationally and within regional competition.

Ultimately, Turkey’s railway interconnection line projects directly contribute to the country’s economic growth and ensure that its logistics infrastructure plays a central role in national development. By creating a modern, integrated, and extensive railway network, Turkey’s goal of becoming a global logistics hub is becoming increasingly achievable.
