Major Transformation in Austria’s Air Power: M-346FA Training and Light Attack Aircraft Project
Austria has taken a significant step to strengthen its national defense strategy by officially approving the procurement of Leonardo‘s developed M-346FA training and light attack aircraft. This is not just a military procurement but also a major strategic move that will transform the technological and operational capacity of the country’s air forces.
This investment, valued at approximately 1.5 billion euros, involves the purchase of a total of 12 aircraft. With each unit costing around 80 million euros, the investment and added value are clearly defined. The scope of the procurement extends beyond just the aircraft themselves. Integrated elements such as weapons systems, training infrastructure, simulators, and maintenance services are also included in this project, aiming to ensure long-term security and operational effectiveness.
New Aircraft and Operational Standards
Austria plans to use these aircraft not only for training purposes but also for operational missions. The country designates Linz-Hรถrsching Air Base as the center, aiming to replace the old Saab 105 aircraft entirely with next-generation jets. Along with this development, pilot training will be conducted in both virtual and live environments, enhancing training quality while optimizing costs.
The aircraft are planned to be operational by 2028. This means not only introducing new-generation aircraft but also strengthening regional air defense and surveillance capabilities.
International Cooperation and Industrial Strategies
Austria’s significant decision not only restructuring its defense force but also deepens its strategic partnership with Italy and Leonardo. Under the agreement signed between the two countries, additional industrial projects and supply contracts worth a total of around 400 million euros are also involved. This represents a major opportunity for regional security and industry.
The first delivery of Austria’s M-346FA aircraft is scheduled for the end of 2024. This process includes pilot and technical personnel training, as well as the integration of weapon systems and support infrastructure for the aircraft. In the long term, this project will result in a significant leap forward for Austria’s defense industry in terms of technology and industrial competence.
