Germany is implementing a comprehensive military reform aimed at strengthening national security and updating defense strategies. This reform not only abolishes compulsory military service but also introduces a new voluntary-based military model. The most significant step taken in this field is the requirement starting from 2026 for all male citizens of legal age to undergo health and physical fitness checks, conducted at designated centers.

The German government designed the new military model to be modern and flexible. In this model, male citizens born in 2008 and later will be required to start the military process by filling out designated online surveys. Subsequently, medical and psychological evaluations will be conducted at a total of 24 clinical centers to determine individuals’ suitability for military service. In the new model, those who participate will join training programs lasting between six and eleven months. During this period, they will receive basic military training and later perform reserve military duties. Throughout this process, individuals will receive a monthly salary of approximately 2,600 Euros (around 3,030 dollars) before taxes, which aims to increase their motivation. Additionally, to encourage long-term participation, various social rights and benefits are provided to those serving in the military.

In major cities like Berlin, some of the public oppose mandatory military service, while calls for increased social awareness and consciousness are also made.
