The European transportation ecosystem is preparing for a groundbreaking step in cross-border travel. The Czech private railway operator Leo Express announced that as of June 25, 2026, it will start direct train services to the Ukrainian border with a fully commercial initiative, without any public support. This move will bring the distances between Eastern and Western Europe closer with rail networks.
One of Europe’s Longest Direct Routes
The new service, covering a route of over 1,300 kilometers, will be one of Europe’s longest direct passenger train routes. Departing from the city of Przemyśl at the Poland-Ukrainian border, trains will pass through strategic points such as Krakow, Ostrava, and Prague, reaching the interior of Germany via Dresden and Leipzig before arriving in Frankfurt. The fact that the route stops at Frankfurt Airport will create an integrated bridge between intercontinental flights and railway travel.
A Strategic and Cultural Corridor
Leo Express CEO Peter Köhler defines this project not only as a transportation route but also as a corridor connecting administrative and cultural centers. Connecting a financial giant like Frankfurt with historic cities like Prague and Krakow, this route aims to enhance accessibility between Western and Eastern Europe. Additionally, this initiative is expected to provide a strong alternative to existing operators in the German domestic market.
Passenger Comfort and Affordable Pricing Policy
Focusing on travel comfort, Leo Express will offer amenities such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, and meal services on its trains. Ticket prices are planned to start at a competitive level of 10 Euros. Although initially tickets will be sold without reservations, by 2026, options for Business class and reserved seats will also be integrated into the system.
Success of the Open Access Railway Market
This initiative was seen as a significant success for the European Independent Railway Operators Alliance (ALLRAIL) in the liberalization of the railway market. ALLRAIL Secretary General Nick Brooks stated that this project is the best example of long-distance connections that are commercially feasible. The success of this corridor could pave the way for similar international commercial railway connections in the future.
