Hitachi Rail Metro Cars Enter Service in Baltimore

A New Era in Modern Transportation Solutions: The Renovation of Baltimore Metro

Baltimore, one of the largest cities on the east coast of the United States, has taken a revolutionary step in transportation infrastructure by replacing costly and aging metro vehicles with modern, efficient, and sustainable technologies. This transformation is of great importance not only for the city residents but also for the overall economic and environmental sustainability of the region.

Developing Transportation Infrastructure with Hitachi Rail

As part of the project, innovative train technologies developed by Japan-based Hitachi Rail were deployed. These technologies are successfully used in numerous cities worldwide and offer high-performance solutions suitable for Baltimore’s transportation needs. Modern trains guarantee high speed, low energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs, and top-level passenger comfort.

The Power of SelTrac™ CBTC Technology

One of the biggest steps in transforming city transportation was achieved with Hitachi Rail’s SelTrac™ CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) system. This advanced system enables real-time communication between trains and signaling infrastructure, increasing operational safety and efficiency. As a result, Baltimore’s metro can operate smoothly even at higher frequencies and under congested traffic conditions.

Features of the Next-Generation Trains

The renewed trains, with their stainless steel body, highlight durability, while the interior design emphasizes modernity and comfort. Each train increases operational flexibility with bi-directional capability and accelerates urban transportation with a total capacity of 196 passengers. Accessibility for disabled individuals and smart passenger information systems meet the needs of all travelers. Additionally, the trains are designed to run approximately 80,000 miles annually, indicating a driverless and secure transportation infrastructure.

Advanced Digital Manufacturing and Assembly Facility

Specifically for the project, a new factory established by Hitachi Rail in Hagerstown, Maryland, is used for train assembly and manufacturing. Covering an area of 307,000 square feet, this modern factory is among the most advanced digital manufacturing facilities in the world. Using real-time supply chain tracking, 3D printing, and advanced diagnostics technologies, 20 trains are produced per month. This center is positioned as the backbone of Hitachi Rail’s North America operations.

Sustainable Investment

All stakeholders involved emphasize that this modernization is not only an innovation but also a strategic investment aiming at long-term sustainability and social benefit. Electric and low-emission trains help reduce the city’s carbon footprint and, with energy-efficient technologies, provide economic advantages. These developments ensure that Baltimore’s institutions and people can connect confidently to the new transportation infrastructure.

Future Outlook and Reimagining Infrastructure

The renovated metro system stands out not only technically but also as an integrated transportation ecosystem within urban life. Thanks to modern trains and advanced signaling infrastructure, Baltimore will offer a faster, safer, and more comfortable transportation experience than ever before. This transformation continues to be a significant step toward reducing traffic congestion and minimizing environmental impacts in the city.
