Israeli minister’s resignation decision

According to a report in Haaretz, Strategic Affairs Minister Dermer, who is known as one of Netanyahu’s closest allies, submitted his resignation letter to the Prime Minister. In his resignation letter, thanking Netanyahu, who he claimed “stood firm against internal and external pressures”, Dermer stated that the far-right government will be remembered both for the October 7 attack and for the two-year ‘war on seven fronts’ that followed.

Dermer, who promised his family upon taking office in 2022 that he would serve only two years as minister, said he had to extend his time in the ministerial seat twice.

After serving as Israel’s former ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer was appointed as Minister of Strategic Affairs. While playing a key role in the government’s relations with the US and regional countries, he also headed the team conducting negotiations for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza.

An Israeli source speaking to The Times of Israel claimed that although Dermer would leave the government, he will continue to play an active role on issues such as expanding the Abraham Accords and will serve as Netanyahu’s special envoy.

Israeli media reports suggest that Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the US, will take the place of Dermer as Minister of Strategic Affairs.
