In recent years, Turkey has made significant investments in comprehensive connecting line projects that focus on developing railway transportation and strengthening the country’s logistics infrastructure. These projects establish direct and efficient connections between industrial facilities, ports, and logistics centers, thereby reducing transportation costs and increasing Turkey’s global competitiveness. These infrastructure initiatives are critically important for the country’s economic sustainability and regional trade leadership.
Current Status and Updated Connecting Line Network
The currently active 445.8 kilometers of connecting lines on Turkey’s railway network constitute a vital foundation for meeting the country’s logistical needs. These lines aim to accelerate transportation processes and minimize costs by providing direct links between industrial zones and ports. Additionally, in the upcoming period, the construction of 150.5 kilometers of lines across 9 different projects is underway. Among these projects are strategic points such as Filyos Port connection, Adapazarı Karsu, Afyonkarahisar İşcehisar, and Dörtyol-Hassa Tunnel and Railway Phase 1. The new lines that will be permanently operated aim to significantly increase the country’s logistical capacity.
Goals and 2028 Vision
In line with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s targets for 2028, plans are in place to extend the connecting line length to 608 kilometers and to substantially increase the total freight transported via these lines. With the realization of this strategy, Turkey’s total connecting line length will reach 885.1 kilometers, forming a strong and integrated railway network nationwide with 331 connection points. These developments will not only increase the share of railway freight transportation in the total transport volume but also offer significant benefits for economic growth and sustainable development.
Economic and Strategic Importance of Investments
The construction of connecting lines consolidates Turkey’s logistical superiority, facilitates export and import processes, and reduces dependency on road transportation. Thanks to these lines, the direct and rapid movement of goods between industrial zones and ports provides notable time and cost advantages. Furthermore, considering that approximately 46.9% of total railway freight transportation is carried out via connecting lines or the connections they provide, it is clear how critical these infrastructure investments are for the country’s economic future.
Contribution of Investment and Capacity Increase to the National Economy
The projected data for 2025 indicates that the total freight transferred via connecting lines will reach 9.8 million tons. This volume will grow exponentially not only with the existing infrastructure but also with the commissioning of new build and planned lines. The total length of current projects is 82.4 kilometers, with an additional 189.4 kilometers of new line construction underway. As a result, Turkey’s railway freight capacity and efficiency will approach global standards, and regional and global supply chain integration will be substantially strengthened.
